Why Europe isn’t working and how it could work properly – in 2016, shortly before the Brexit referendum in the UK, this complex and multifaceted issue was more topical than ever.

Speaking in front of a large audience, political scientist Ulrike Guérot outlined her vision for the future of Europe.

Eine politische Utopie (Why Europe Must Become a Republic – A Political Utopia) was published in April 2016. She is the founder and director of the European Democracy Lab (EDL), a Berlin-based think tank.

“The people of Europe want a European solution that European politics can’t provide. This requires political equality that goes beyond the nation state, as well as new goals and conceptual clarity.”
